(You really need to listen to it with head phones or good speakers to hear all the details.) To all my fellow music/Star Wars Nerds out there, I finally got. Liberty Park Music's media team shows you how to play the Imperial March on Garageband's musical typing tool, if you find this fun and want to learn piano ch.

Area of Study:DURATION
Stage 4MANDATORY COURSE

Musicology

Before the students can understand the concept of Duration and how it is used in “The Imperial March (Darth Vader’s theme)” they should be able to recognise different note values. Click on the picture below to read about “Rhythm Cat.” This is a popular iPad App that teaches note values of crotchets, quavers, semiquavers etc in the form of a game. If students enter the proposed rhythm correctly they can then proceed to the next level. Students can download this Free App and verse other students in the class. Through the ability to recognise rhythm in music students can understand how it can be manipulated to create a melody. Click on the picture below to view “Rhythm Cat.”

Aural

This activity requires students to guess which character is related to the piece of music you are about to play. Play “The Imperial March (Darth Vader’s theme)” and when a student guesses that is Darth Vaders theme ask them to tell you how they knew this. Students at this level will most likely be unable to explain this properly. Play the piece again but this time divide the students into groups of three; beat, tempo and rhythm. Students in each group are to write dot points about their topic in relation to the music. It is important to assist each group. Prompt the beat group to note that there is a constant pulse, inform the tempo group to note how fast or slow the piece is and does it change? If so how does the mood change because of this? Is the beat 4/4? Prompt the rhythm group to note that it is a shuffle, that it is military like and is repetitive. After the exercise students and teacher are to discuss their answers. Students are to understand that composers film and multimedia manipulate rhythm in order to convey an emotion, an idea or convey a character. If time persists show the following video to the students. This is video is a fun, modern approach to understanding how music in film can manipulate mood and character

Performing

Students are to perform “The Imperial March (Darth Vader’s Theme)” in the keyboard section of garage band on their iPads. Students can click on the link below to download a simple version of the sheet music to this song.

Assist students in playing along all together, write the notes from the sheet music on the board if needed. After playing the song a few times students should be able to apply what they have learnt about note value and rhythm to their reading and playing of music.

Creativity/Composition

Instruct the students that they are to become film composers for the lesson. The students are to use the same notes they learnt in performing Darth Vader’s theme in garageband to create a new theme. They are to choose from four different types o of genres:

– comedy

– horror

– sci-fi

– romantic

Students are to experiment with rhythm and tone colour when creating music to convey their topic. Students can watch the video below to learn how to insert loops into their timeline on garageband.

After students are finished composing their new scores listen to them with the class. Prompt the students to note how the rhythm has changed. For example the notes played in a romantic theme may be more legato than staccato. Horror movies might see a mix of both of these rhythms creating a more staggered melody. Furthermore students can click on the edit function on their timelines in garageband to compare the length of the notes they have played. This will prove that rhythm constitutes tone and mood in a song.
